An umbrella organization covering sixteen Hispanic student groups, the Mexican American Student Leadership Council (MASLC) was formed in October 1984 to facilitate communication and cooperation among Mexican American groups and student leaders at the University of Texas. It not only focused on the needs and concerns of the Mexican American student community, but also its achievements. The Council strived as one of its main goals to motivate Mexican American students by promoting the influence of the larger Hispanic community on the university and focusing on the accomplishments of individual Mexican Americans of all backgrounds and disciplines.
In the first year of its existence the Council initiated a series of annual conferences called Success that profiled Mexican American achievement by featuring distinguished Mexican Americans from across the nation. The first conference, Success ‘85, was held on April 13, 1985 at the University of Texas.

The collection is organized into two series. The first, Organizational Records, contains those records pertaining to MASLC generally. Here one can find meeting agendas, lists of organizations, and documents relating to the founding of the Council. The second series, Success Conferences, consists of budgets, agendas, correspondences, photographs, and promotional materials relating to the annual Success conferences. Conferences are arranged in chronological order, while files within each conference series are arranged alphabetically.
