Novelist, poet, and educator Rolando R. Hinojosa-Smith was born January 21, 1929, in Mercedes, Texas. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1969. Known for a series of novels set in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, Hinojosa-Smith won Quinto Sol Award for Literature in 1972 for Estampas del Valle y otras obras, and the Premio Casa de las Americas in 1976 for his Klail City y sus alrededores. He is professor of creative writing at the University of Texas at Austin.

Consists of literary manuscripts of Hinojosa-Smith, along with some correspondence and ephemera. The collection is organized into three series: 1. Literary productions, 2. Ephemera and newsclippings, and 3. Correspondence. Literary productions contain handwritten notes and manuscripts, typescripts, and galley proofs of novels, poems, short stories and essays. Correspondence includes incoming correspondence relating to Hinojosa-Smith's works from editors and colleagues, and several drafts of the author's responses to questions from critic Francisco Lomeli about his writing. Ephemera includes posters, leaflets, newspapers, copies of clippings, and invitations. The bulk of the collection consists of manuscripts of published works including Estampas del Valle (1972), Generaciones y semblanzas, also published as Klail City y sus alrededores (1976), Korean love songs (1978), Rites and witnesses (1980), and Mi querido Rafa (1981). Some essays and lectures on Chicano literature, and some unpublished poems and short stories are also included.
