Hans Mann Photographs, c.1950s-1960sPreliminary Inventory
Biographical SketchPhotographer Hans Mann was born in Ulm, Germany and emigrated to South America in 1930. He is the author of The 12 prophets of O Aleijadinho (1958, 1967), Strolling through Rio (1958), and Buenos Aires, recopilación fotográfica (1946). Mann died in Recife, Brazil, in 1966. It is believed that the photographs were taken or collected by Hans Mann, though provenance is not clear for all of the included images. The collection is roughly arranged geographically. Return to the Table of Contents Administrative InformationCustodial HistoryThe collection now called the Hans Mann Photograph Collection (formerly the Brazilian Photographic Archive) was transferred to the Benson Collection in 1970 from the College of Fine Arts where it was held as the collection of "Brazilian Art and Architecture." The Hans Mann Collection had previously been transferred to the Art Department from the Humanities Research Center in 1968.
