Letterbooks of business letters and telegrams from the Banco Mercantíl de Yucatán, which merged with the Banco Yucateco to become the Banco Peninsular Mexicano in 1908.
</did>

<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>Administrative History</head>
<p>Banco Mercantíl de Yucatán, S.A., commenced operations on March 4, 1890, with $500,000 in capital. A worldwide economic crisis late in 1906 led the bank into difficulties (shared by another local bank, the Banco Yucateco), which were addressed by the intervention of the Banco Nacional de México, S.A., on June 5, 1907. Months later the two Yucatecan banks were merged, resulting in the creation of the Banco Peninsular Mexicano, S.A. The merger was ratified by the shareholders of the Banco Mercantíl de Yucatán on January 18, 1908, and the constitution of the new bank was signed on March 31, 1908.</p></bioghist>

<scopecontent encodinganalog="520"><head>Scope and Contents Note</head>
<p>Letterbooks containing copies of business letters and telegrams from the Banco Mercantíl de Yucatán, primarily to European, Mexican, and U.S. banks (usually located in New York). The letterbooks are in Spanish, and arranged chronologically. Some of the communications were written to business firms or individuals located in Mexico, Europe, and the U.S. The documents consist largely of confirmations or notifications of transactions; a few letters refer to other bank business. Many items in the last volumes relate to the merger. Each volume contains an alphabetical index to recipients of the communications. Materials from January-April 1903 (in Volume 10) have suffered severe damage and loss of informational content. Through Volume 10 the items are manuscript; starting in Volume 11 (which begins February 3, 1905) they consist of typescripts of letters and copies of telegrams. Chronological gaps in coverage exist between all but the last six volumes.</p></scopecontent>
