<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>Biographical Sketch</head>
<p>José S. Alvarez, who wrote under several pseudonyms including "Fray Mocho" and "Fabio Carrizo," was born Aug. 26, 1858, in Galeguaychu, Argentina and died in Aug. 23, 1903, in Buenos Aires. He migrated to Buenos Aires in 1879 and worked for several newspapers including <title render="italic">El Nacional</title>, <title render="italic">La Pampa</title>, <title render="italic">La Patria Argentina</title>, <title render="italic">El Diario</title>, <title render="italic">La Prensa</title>, <title render="italic">La Opinion</title>, <title render="italic">La Tribuna</title>, etc. In 1889 he founded the magazine "Caras y Caretas" in which he published many of his short stories, later collected under the title <title render="italic">Cuentos de Fray Mocho</title>. His stories reflect the manners, customs and dialects of Argentina in a realistic manner and are often the result of keen direct observation.</p></bioghist>
