Sociedad Mutualista "Melchor Ocampo," 1926-1941
Historical NoteSociedades mutualistas were mutual aid societies that provided Mexican Americans with critical support during the early part of the twentieth century. Although their political ideas varied, most emphasized cooperation, economic protection, education, and community service. The Sociedad Mutualista "Melchor Ocampo" of Eagle Pass, Texas was founded in 1922. It was formed to provide its members with medical, disability, burial benefits. The society took its name from the 19th-century Mexican statesman and political reformer. Items are arranged chronologically within each series. Included are financial records, membership applications, rosters, regulations, amendments to regulations, and notes. Also found within are correspondence with other Mexican American mutual aid societies, a power of attorney relating to a Mexican patent, and correspondence dealing with an honorary membership given to Mexican consul Samuel J.
