Biographical Sketch

Teódulo Ramírez was born on February 17, 1865, in Ciudad Guerrero, Tamaulipas, Mexico. His parents were Manuel Ramírez Gutiérrez and Teresa Vela Benavides. Raised in Ciudad Guerrero, Teódulo as a young man divided his time between that city and the family ranch of Ramireño in Zapata County, Texas. In 1894 he married María del Refugio Benavides. After María Benavides de Ramírez’s death in 1917, Ramírez married Laurencia Martínez in 1921.

In 1913 Teódulo Ramírez joined the armed forces to fight in the Mexican Revolution. He quickly attained the rank of Coronel. In Tamaulipas, Ramírez fought with the “Brigada Caballero,” the forces of General Luís Caballero of the 5th Division Northeast. In 1914 Ramírez also took part in the reoccupation of the Port of Veracruz with the 21st Division under the orders of General César López de Lara. He continued his military service until 1924, when he contracted a serious illness and was transferred to a military hospital in Mexico City.

Teódulo Ramírez died on November 23, 1924. Initially buried at the Panteón Español in Mexico City, his remains were transferred in 1952 according to his wishes to Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas.

Scope and Contents Note

Correspondence, military documents, photographs, biographical and financial documents, 1877-1952, 1997 (bulk 1917-1924), most in Spanish, totaling 3 linear inches, document the military career and life of Coronel Teódulo Ramírez (1865-1924). The papers are organized into two subgroups: the papers of Teódulo Ramírez, and those of his widow Laurencia Martínez de Ramírez.

The Teódulo Ramírez correspondence is generally formal in nature, and includes letters to and from military figures in the Mexican Revolution, including General Luís Caballero, Emiliano Nafarrate, Gregorio Osuna, and César López de Lara. Military documents include an official military service record (1918), certificates of service, orders, and legal-style documents concerning charges of insurrection raised against Ramírez in 1919. The general historical documents include a biographical sketch of Ramirez written in 1997, and a history of the Ramírez family ranch at Ramireño.

The Laurencia Martínez de Ramírez subgroup consists mainly of correspondence documenting her attempt to receive the military dependency benefits of her deceased husband.
