This collection was assembled primarily by Joaquín Arrigunaga Peón (1904-1988) and his daughter, Maritza Arrigunaga Coello (1951-), who added to the papers already in the possession of their family by means of exchanges and purchases from bookdealers in Campeche and Merida, Mexico.

Summary: Broadsides, manuscripts, and pamphlets relating to Yucatan in the nineteenth century and to government in New Spain and Mexico. More than half of the documents were published in Yucatán and pertain to local government and affairs and to church-state relations in Yucatán, with emphasis on the taxation of Indians by the Catholic Church. Other materials document Mexican loyalty to King Ferdinand VII of Spain; Mexican support for the Spanish Constitution of 1812; efforts to form a republican government in Mexico; and
changes in the early national governments (these materials include a few items relating to Agustín Iturbide, Guadalupe Victoria, and Vicente Guerrero).
</scopecontent>
