Biographical Note

David P. Appleby, a professor of music and scholar of Brazilian composers, was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and began collecting musical scores when he was seven years old. As an adult, Appleby worked as a professional pianist, and became a professor of music at Eastern Illinois University. He was the author of several books, including Bravo Brazil!, The Music of Brazil, and Heitor Villa-Lobos: A Life. Appleby actively collected materials on major Brazilian composers, both past and present, and corresponded with many of the composers he studied.


Scope and Contents Note

Composer files, research materials, written works, audiovisual recordings, musical artifacts, and oversize musical works comprise the David P. Appleby Collection . The first series,    Brazilian Composer Files (8 linear feet), includes correspondence, notes, and the works of, Brazilian composers. Much of the material concerns Heitor Villa-Lobos, but also includes works, correspondence, and articles on Henrique de Curitiba, Camargo Guarnieri, Claudio Santoro, Osvaldo Lacerda, and José Joaquim Emérico Lobo de Mesquita. The second series,    Research Materials(2.5 linear feet), contains broader materials on Brazil and music more generally, as well as works produced by other writers.    Written Works (5 linear inches) is comprised of exerpts from Appleby's Villa Lobos: A Life, as well as the published edition of The Music of Brazil. The    Audiovisual Materials series (1.25 linear feet) is extensive and includes videotapes, audio reels, microcassettes, and microfilm of several Brazilian composers. The fifth series,    Artifacts (1.25 linear feet), contains musical instruments and other native artifacts from South America. The    Oversize series (5.5 linear feet) is comprised of musical scores, and are arranged alphabetically by composer.

I. Brazilian Composer Files, 1779-2001

This series contains files on over ninety Brazilian composers, ranging from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Each composer is represented by his or her music, and in some cases by correspondence, biographical materials, and reviews of their compositions. All files are arranged in alphabetical order, except for the files concerning Heitor Villa-Lobos, whose extensive materials are found at the end of the series.

Audio reels, videotapes, microcassettes, and audio cassettes comprise this series. There are recordings of music, speeches, documentaries and interviews. Included in this series is a documentary on Carmen Miranda, radio interviews with David Appleby, and recordings of over 40 musical works by Villa-Lobos and other Brazilian composers. Note that most published recordings were separated for individual cataloging in the University of Texas library catalog [see Separated Materials note above].
