Poet and Nobel Laureate (1945) Gabriela Mistral was born Lucila Godoy y Alcayaga in Vicuña, Chile, in 1889. Mistral was an active member of the League of Nations and served as Chilean consul in Italy, Spain, and Portugal. She taught Spanish literature in the United States at Columbia University, Barnard College, and Vassar College, and at the University of Puerto Rico. Her works include Desolación, Ternura, and Tala. She died in 1957.

Letters and manuscripts, 1911-1949 (2 inches), of Chilean poet and Nobel Laureate Gabriela Mistral. In one folder and three thin bound volumes, the Gabriela Mistral Papers include letters (1911-1923) of Mistral (writing as Lucila Godoy) to poet Antonio Bórquez Solar; letters (1937-1949) of Mistral to Guillermo de Torre and his wife Norah Borges (sister of Jorge Luis Borges); and two typed manuscript essays: the epistle "Respuesta a un Manifiesto de Españoles" (1935), and "Calpe-Argentina y el Libro Español en la América" (n.d.).
