Provenance Note
The Sánchez Navarro Family Papers were purchased by the Benson Latin American Collection in 1943 from the heirs of Carlos Sánchez Navarro y Beráin. The papers were described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in May 1994.
Biographical Sketch
The Sánchez Navarro family owned the largest private estate in the history of Mexico. Circa 1763, José Miguel Sánchez Navarro, the curate of Monclova, Coahuila, began to accumulate property in Coahuila. Until his death in 1821 he attended to church matters and to his private interests in farming, ranching, commerce, and rental properties. The estate was inherited by his nephew, José Melchor Sánchez Navarro, who continued to enlarge it. His sons, Carlos and Jacobo Sánchez Navarro y Beráin, inherited the estate when José Melchor died in 1836. In 1840 Carlos purchased the marquisate of San Miguel de Aguayo, increasing the Sánchez Navarro landholdings to their maximum size of over 16 million acres. Between 1861 and 1865, most of the property was confiscated, first as payment for back taxes, then as punishment for Carlos and Jacobo's collaboration with Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico. After Maximilian was overthrown in 1867, Carlos was imprisoned for one year, then exiled. In 1870 he returned to Mexico City where he lived in poverty until he died in 1876. Carlos' heirs recovered some of the family property but subsequently sold it.
Scope and Contents Note
Correspondence, legal and financial documents, reports, lists, and other materials relating to the business and personal concerns of the Sánchez Navarro family, especially ownership and operation of haciendas and a retail store in the Mexican state of Coahuila, during the 17th through the 19th centuries. The bulk of the correspondence relates to matters of hacienda operation and concerns livestock and crops, Indian raids, labor problems, illnesses and deaths, weather and natural disasters, debts, water resources, boundary disputes, building projects, and military, legal, and political problems. Religious matters are the subject of some of the letters and notes to José Miguel Sánchez Navarro.
The papers also contain a small quantity of uncalendared material, which includes financial documents, correspondence, literary productions, legal documents, lists, recipes, fragments, photocopies of typescripts and documents held by Pedro Sánchez Navarro.

Maria in Villa de Olmedillo, Bishopric of Osma in Old Castile, certifies, on January 3, 1717, to the baptism of a legitimate son of Matias Miguel and Manuela Rodirgo, to whom was given the name of Matias. Data is given as to the exact location of the record of the baptism in the Books of Baptism, together with a description of the particular book. 1684, September 7, to 1773, October 18:
San Francisco de Coahuila. Captain Fernando Ramos de Arriola registers a mine and asks for a grant of land, which is granted. On February 13, 1687, Captain Ramos transfers this property to Alferez Antonio Guerra. On August 16, 1689, General Alonzo de Leon grants a tract of land to Alferez Antonio Guerra. This title was confirmed on October 13, 1792. There are other grants of land and transfers also recorded in this expediente.

Veracruz and Mexico City. These are copies of records pertaining to the sale at auction of certain property, including six houses and other lands in Nueva Vizcaya, belonging to the estate of Don Manuel de San Juan, deceased, who owed 122,773 pesos to the royal treasury since the year of 1709. The collection was begun in the year of 1756. A complete history of the case is given in these papers.

Monclova. Andres Ramon obtains a grant of six caballerias of land, with water rights, on the north side of Nadadores river. In 1746, Ramon's heirs transferred this land to their sister, Antonia Ramon. In 1766, Antonia Ramon sold it to D. Francisco Abrego. In 1737, a grant was made to D. Francisco Flores Flores over almost the same tract. In 1770, the grant was confirmed to D. Francisco Flores.

1697, January 18, to 1767, December 10:
Monclova. Juan Fernandez Canseco obtains a grant of land at Las Juntas, known as Doma del "Chivato". Possession of this grant was given to him without surveying it. In 1700, the viceroy ordered possession of this tract to be given to Jose Sanchez in view of Canseco's deed of sale to him. In 1760, the lands were surveyed.

Joseph Flores orders the goods of Joseph Maldonado to be sold at auction to satisfy debt owing to the cofradia. Three auction sales are had. On July 27, 1718, the goods are sold at Guadalajara to Capt Antonio Flores y Valdez who delivered them to the cofradia in satisfaction of the debt. This was the Cofradia del Santisimo Sacramento de la Iglesia Parroqui de la Villa de Santiago de la Monclova.

The heirs of Antonio de Luna get the grant given to their father in 1704. The grant was for six caballerias of land at a place known as Las Burras. In 1752, the heirs of Luna sold the land to Francisco Xavier Barrera. In 1760, a new validation and survey was made. In 1798, Barrera's heirs sold it to D. Jose Miguel Sanchez Navarro.

1747, January 14:
Mexico City. Title to sitios of land in the Cañones de San Marcos y los Pinos. This appears to be a correction deed, necessitated by reason of the fact that the party to whom the original deed had been made had not realized that the Huecos were also included in the first grant. Such additional portion of the land was being claimed by one Francisco Flores, who was, by this document, declared not to be its rightful owner. The document contains also the testimony of the various witnesses in the matter.

Joseph Fernandez Jajardo of an Hacienda and buildings in Monclova. De Aguirre calims that Jajardo had no power of attorney to make this sale.
