<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>Administrative History</head><p>The Hispanic Society of America, founded in 1904 by Archer Milton Huntington, promotes the study of languages, literature, arts, and history of countries where Spanish or Portuguese languages are or have been spoken. Located in New York City, New York, the society holds a rare books library and a museum containing art works and artifacts from Spain, Portugal, Central and South America. The society has been an active publisher of scholarly journals and monographs, and has housed exhibits concerning Hispanic culture from its inception. Hispanic Society of America continues to grow an expand, remaining an important resource for scholars.</p></bioghist>

<scopecontent encodinganalog="520"><head>Scope and Contents Note</head>
<p>Postcards (1921-1928) document publishing activities primarily of the Hispanic Society of America. Showing significant landmarks and sense of everyday life, the postcards visually document life in several Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries during the early twentieth century. The postcards are arranged into twelve series based on individual countries. Each series is divided into numerous subseries regarding geographical entities such as cities or lakes. Item-level description presents the narrative title or label printed on each postcard. The first nine series contain unused postcards produced by the Hispanic Society of America (1928).</p><p>The last three series are general postcards by unknown publishers donated by Pearl Cashell Jackson. The Miscellaneous postcards and those from Mexico are ones that were actually mailed, and contain brief correspondence.</p></scopecontent>
