Biographical Sketch

Mexican collector, bibliophile, and publisher of documents relating to Mexican independence. Born 1827 in Aguascalientes, Mexico; died 1893. Published "Colección de documentos para la historia de la guerra de independencia de México de 1808 á 1821".

Scope and Contents

The Hernández y Dávalos Collection is composed of manuscripts and printed material relating primarily to the Mexican independence movement, but also pertaining to conditions in Mexico at the end of the eighteenth century, the empire of Agustín Iturbide, the establishment of the republic, and Mexico's governance and foreign relations, especially with England, France, Spain, and the U.S. Many historical figures of Mexico are represented in the collection.

The Hernández y Dávalos manuscripts, which are described in this calendar, include letters, descriptions of battles, records of insurgents' trials, military service records, documents concerning the conspiracy of Manuel Reyes, the archives of General José de la Cruz, many personal papers of José Mariano Michelena, and material gathered by Carlos María Bustamante to document the independence movement.

A second grouping of Hernández y Dávalos materials, Printed Material (1811-1886), is described in an item list and card file available in the Benson Latin American Collection rare books and manuscripts reading room. This subgroup contains among its pamphlets and broadsides many written works, such as manifestos, speeches, odes, poetry, sermons, and pastoral letters, as well as decrees, circulars, and proclamations. Most items in Printed Material pertain to independence, the empire of Iturbide, and the early days of the republic.

The Juan E. Hernández y Dávalos Collection was purchased by the Benson Latin American Collection in 1943 from the heirs of Fernando González.

The collection was described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in April 1994, with a basic finding aid initially prepared on 25 January 1995.
