Foreword to the Calendar, by Carlos Eduardo Castañeda

In the preparation of this Calendar, the compiler and the editor have striven first of all to acquaint the public with enough of the contents of the remarkable Gondra Collection of manuscripts to enable the student or research worker to determine whether he should examine a given manuscript personally. The listing of the documents by author and title alone would not have been sufficient for this purpose, particularly since a large portion of the manuscripts consists of correspondence, the individual pieces of which bear no formal titles. A description of the contents, in addition to the usual descriptive data of such materials, is necessary to make the Calendar a working tool. The description of the contents in each instance has, therefore, been made as concise and uniform as possible, without sacrificing clearness and completeness.
The additional bibliographical and analytical information given in connection with individual items makes no pretense to be exhaustive. To have made it so would have required a lifetime. An earnest effort has been made in each instance to be as thorough as possible under the circumstances. The editor and compiler have spent almost ten years on and off, in the preparation of this Calendar. It is hoped that use by competent scholars and students will correct inaccuracies and help place in the proper perspective many of the items listed. It has been thought that the need to make such a descriptive list available to students and research workers without delay outweighs the desire for perfection, as well as all other considerations.
Entry Names.
Each document is entered under author, unless not ascertainable, in which case it is entered under title. In the case of long names, these are given in full the first time, together with titles of offices held by the writer of the document, unless they are brought out in the title. Thereafter, the portion of the name most commonly used to designate the author is employed. Composite names in common use during the XVI Century are separated into their component parts where obvious: e.g. Hernandarias de Saavedra is entered as Arias de Saavedra, Hernando. The general arrangement is chronological. The spelling of common names has been modernized in accordance with well established practice. For example, the x has been replaced by j, sometimes g, rarely s: e.g. Ximénez: Jiménez, Rexe: Rege, Xuárez: Suárex. The ç has been made s before e and i, and z before a, o and u. Names that appear occasionally and have unusual spellings have generally been left intact. In listing a series of documents by the same author, the name appears in full in connection with the first, a long line replacing it in the subsequent entries of the series: (_____). Royal orders and decrees of all kinds are listed under the name of the sovereign authority or king who issued them.
Titles.
The titles of documents are reproduced as accurately as possible without modernization of spelling. In the case of long titles, non-essential parts are sometimes omitted, the omission being indicated by the usual sing: (....). Some documents in the collection have no formal title, but they bear a made-up title placed by a previous owner on the first page, more often on the last, frequently in pencil, in the nature of a topical summary. Some titles of this type, when they seemed to fit the particular document, have been adopted. In other instances, the compilers of the Calendar have had to make up an entirely new title, or adopt a modification of the pencilled summary, or take a phrase or sentence in the text that seems to characterize the document. In such instances, brackets have been used to enclose that part of the title which has been added or devised by the compilers. The practice of utilizing as titles modified key sentences in the text explains the archaisms that will at times be observed.
Date and Place.
In all cases where the place and date appear in the manuscript, both are indicated immediately after the title. Whenever the place and / or date, or both, form part of the title, given or made up, they are not repeated. The place of writing is also omitted whenever it is obvious, as in the case of the correspondence of the Cabildo of Asunción and other governmental units whose residence is fixed. If the place of writing is not given, none is indicated in the Calendar unless there is reason for making a justifiable asumption, in which case it appears in brackets. In the case of doubtful reading or uncertain identification, the place is given followed by a question mark: (?). Likewise, in the case of missing dates, wherever an assumption has been made on the basis of content, the approximate year is indicated followed by a question mark: 1587?
Description
A set form has been observed as nearly as possible throughout the Calendar. After the author, title, place, and date, the number of folios or leaves is given, followed by l. The length has been indicated by the number of leaves rather than pages. Next comes the size of the leaves. Most of the manuscript copies made from AGI documents included in the collection are on sheets of uniform size 17 × 23 cm., with writing on both sides, but generally numbered in folios. After the size, the Calendar indicates whether a document is part of a larger unit by the folio number. For example, f. 10-20 means that the document is found on leaves 10 to 20 of a longer report, expediente, etc. If the document is a unit in itself, that is separate, this portion of the description is omitted and only the total number of leaves is indicated: e.g. 8 l.
The physical description is followed by a brief statement on the origin of the manuscript. Many are modern copies made at the turn of the century from originals in the Archivo General de Indias. In such cases, the AGI number is given as it appears on the manuscript copy itself. It has been impossible to check the accuracy of the given locations of the originals. In most instances, the location of the originals in other archival depositories has been copied exactly as it appears in the manuscript. The term incomplete is self-explanatory.
M G Number.
The MG number, which appears at the end of each entry on the right hand side in brackets, constitutes the last part of the description. When the collection reached the University of Texas Library, it was accompanied by a typed catalog, author unknown, listing the documents by number, and giving a vague description of all the manuscripts. In this list, which followed neither a subject nor a chronological order, typed copies were noted separately from manuscript copies. The documents themselves were all marked in pencil on the left edge with the corresponding arbitrary number for identification. This arrangement has been preserved in the Latin American Library, except that the typed copies of identical originals have been placed together with the manuscript copies of the same documents, vacating some of the numbered folders. This explains the apparent gaps in the original numeration. In order to find any document listed in this Calendar, it should be requested by the “MG number”, not the “index number” appearing on the left margin of the entry. Rearrangement of the collection to correspond to the chronological sequence of the present Calendar is not feasible because many documents are physically inseparable; that is, a document listed as a separate often begins on the same page where another ends.
Analysis.
In a separate paragraph following the formal entry and physical description of each document, a brief and concise analytical summary of the contents has been made, except where obviously unnecessary. It is hoped that this feature will be of particular use to the student or researcher. Each document has been examined as thoroughly as time permitted, and an earnest effort has been made to put down the bare essentials of its contents for the information of the reader. It was originally contemplated to bring out every proper name and all other pertinent details that might prove of interest to every user. The profusion of data precluded such an undertaking. The analysis herein presented of documents up to the end of the XVII Century is relatively complete. Thereafter, only the principal names of persons, place, rivers, and native tribes have been brought out. It has been the constant aim of the compiler and the editor to make the analysis of items of the XVIII and XIX Centuries as thorough as possible to serve likewise as the key to the wealth of information found in this section of the collection. The reader may rest fairly well assured, therefore, that if a name or topic does not appear in the analysis of a document in this portion of the Calendar, or in the title, it is either not mentioned, or the reference is so slight as to be negligible.
Points to Keep in Mind.
Names and locations that appear in the title are not repeated in the analytical summary of its contents. No matter how often used in a given document or how important, the name of any person or place appears in the analysis only once, for it is presumed that a serious reader will want to examine the complete manuscript personally if reference is made to a subject or person in whom he is interested. In most instances the connection of persons or places to important incidents is indicated by a phrase, either long or short. If the connection is slight, the proper name alone is given. Place names, if the reference is meager, are noted without comment. Distinction between signatories, witnesses, endorsers, and copyists is not always made. Modernized spelling for proper names has been used where obvious; in doubtful cases, the spelling in the manuscript has been retained. Since names of Indian tribes and nations in South America have not been standardized, a few exceptions to the contrary, these have been left as they appear in the manuscript.
Publication Data.
Following the analytical summary, in a separate paragraph, data is given as to whether the document listed has been published. A large part of the XVI Century documents in the collection have been printed, in whole or in part; not so many of those in the succeeding centuries. To achieve conciseness, a system of abbreviations is used to designate the work in which the manuscript has been printed. For the abbreviations used, see the Appendix. Document numbers where used follow the system of the work in question, and are usually shown in small capitals.
The printed text of the documents has frequently been found to be not identical. In nearly every case, spelling differences, due to variant readings of the manuscript, inconsistent efforts to modernize the spelling, faulty editing, or the use of different copies, were discovered. Variations of this sort, except in significant cases, have not been noted. When the manuscript document in the collection is described as complete, but the printed text is not, the part or parts published have usually been indicated. Other remarks have been added when deemed necessary.
This part of the work is necessarily incomplete. Nearly the whole summer of 1949 was spent in checking as many of the published collections of documents and other printed sources as possible. It was decided that further research of this nature would yield diminishing returns and delay the publication beyond what is desirable. Some of the manuscripts related to the problems of boundary disputes are quoted piece-meal in short passages in a maze of publications of the XIX and XX Centuries dealing with the subject, but generally taken out of context. In such cases, if the portion printed is too short or not representative of the general nature of the document, no mention of publication of fragments is made.
Appendix.
Here is to be found the key to the abbreviations of printed works cited. Roles, as complete as possible, of the more important officials of the area dealt with in the documents of the Gondra Collecction, and the years during which they held office, whenever ascertainable, have been added also, such as: Viceroys of Perú and of Río de la Plata; Governors of Paraguay, Río de la Plata, and Tucumán; and Bishops of Paraguay, Salta, and Tucumán. For the Spanish kings and the presidents of the various nations of South America since independence, the reader is referred to Webster's Biographical Dictionary, 1949, pages 690, 693-97.
Conclusion.
The calendaring of the Gondra Collection of manuscripts now in the University of Texas and its publication were made possible largely through various research assistance grants of the Institute of Latin-American Studies of The University of Texas over a period of years, deep and grateful acknowledgement of which is hereby made. The compiler is likewise indebted to The University of Texas Research Council for a fellowship grant in 1940 when work on this project was started.
The editor wishes to assume full responsibility for all errors of omission as well as of commission, and to express his appreciation to the compiler, Dr. Jack Autrey Dabbs, for the long hours of painstaking dedication to a thankless and profitless but absorbing job well done. The years of joint labor on this project have been years made pleasant by the cheerful cooperation given at all times. Under the general supervision of the editor, Dr. Dabbs compiled and prepared the bulk of the Calendar, which we gratefully dedicate to the memory of Dr. Charles Wilson Hackett, deceased chairman of the Institute of Latin-American Studies, whose warm enthusiasm for things Latin American was a constant encouragement, and one of whose last acts was to provide a grant to make possible this publication.
