Biographical NoteFranciscan friar. Born 1657 in Valencia, Spain; died 1726 in the convent of San Francisco de México. Entered the Franciscan order in 1673; ordained to the priesthood in 1682; sent to the missions of the Sierra Gorda, Querétaro, in 1683. Instrumental in the founding of Spanish missions in Texas. Printed material consists of three engravings of Margil de Jesús; on the verso of one is a list entitled, “Documentos pertenecientes á los venerables restos del muy rev. padre Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesús, Abril de 1855.” Included in miscellaneous documents is a copy of the baptismal entry for Margil de Jesús. Processing InformationThe Antonio Margil de Jesús Collection was arranged into Archives and Manuscripts subgroups by earlier library staff. Series were created by the staff of the Mexican Archives Project, which completed processing and description of the collection in January 1994. Finding aid initially prepared by the Mexican Archives Project February 6, 1995. The collection is also available on microfilm.
