Bishop of Puebla, Mexico, and Osma, Spain. Born 1600 in Fitero, Navarra, Spain; died 1659 in Burgo de Osma, Soria, Spain. Consecrated bishop of Puebla de los Ángeles, Mexico, on December 27, 1639; also served briefly as Archbishop of Mexico (1642-1643). In addition to his religious offices, Palafox y Mendoza was very involved in affairs of government and held the posts of fiscal of the Consejo de Guerra, fiscal of the Consejo de Indias, juez de residencia, visitador, and viceroy of New Spain. In Puebla he founded the convent of Santa Inés and several schools, and completed the cathedral. He was an administrative reformer who came into conflict with the Jesuits, with whom he was involved in litigation from 1647 to 1655. Palafox y Mendoza returned to Spain in 1649 and was named bishop of Osma in 1655. He died in 1659 and was beatified on September 12, 1767.

Literary productions and correspondence collected by Genaro García for his work on the life of Palafox. Materials pertain to Palafox's dispute with the Jesuits regarding the diezmo (tithing), to church affairs in Mexico and New Spain (primarily during the seventeenth century), and to the process of Palafox's beatification. Many of these documents were issued by the Society of Jesus. The collection contains a small amount of correspondence from 1647 to 1649, and the following manuscripts: Documentos históricos mexicanos: Palafox y los jesuítas (G41); Oposición hecha al progreso en las causas y procesos de la beatificación de... The Juan de Palafox y Mendoza Collection forms part of the Genaro García Collection, which was purchased by the University of Texas in 1921 from the heirs of Genaro García.
The collection was organized into Archives and Manuscripts subgroups by earlier library staff.
The collection was described by the Benson's Mexican Archives Project in January 1994.
