Historical Note

In 1776 the municipal government of San Luis Potosí began petitioning the King of Spain for establishment of a bishopric in their municipality. In 1792 a formal letter to the king elaborated on the need for the bishopric and for financial assistance in its organization. On May 20, 1800, a cedula was issued by the King of Spain ordering consideration of the establishment of said bishopric; the minister of the royal treasury in Mexico sought the opinions of various bishops. On March 15, 1805, the viceroy approved a recommendation for creation of the bishopric. The bishopric was formally established in 1855.
