Administrative History Note

The San Antonio Society of Pathologists was organized in 1959. The objects of the society were to improve the practice of pathology; to advance the scientific, professional and ethical aspects of pathology; and to present an annual seminar. Membership was extended to all duly qualified pathologists practicing pathology or living in the San Antonio, Texas, area. Residents in training in pathology were allowed as associate members. Meetings were to be held the first and third Monday of each month beginning the 3rd Monday of September and extending through May.

The collection is open for research use. Materials may be viewed in the reading room of the P. I. Nixon Medical Historical Library, located on the 5th floor of the Briscoe Library at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Access to patient records is restricted.

Also contains letter from Stanley L. Blend, lawyer at Oppenheimerk Rosenberg, Kelleher & Wheatley, Inc. to W. R. Laughlin, M.D. re reorganization of society to allow creation of Political Action Committee following IRS rules. Date July 14, 1976. Contains copies of old constitution and by-laws, proposed new constitution, and new bylaws.
3 Financial ledger showing receipts and expenditures for May 9, 1968 – Oct. 26, 1979
4 Correspondence with American Cancer Society. July 26, 1973 – June 26, 1979
5 Financial and tax information.
Savings account statements from December 1967 – June 1978. Checking account statements from June 1955 – July 1982. IRS form 1023 for 1979 applying for exemption as 501(c)(3) along with Articles of Association of San Antonio Pathologists’ Political Action Committee. Also Employee ID notification.
6 Miscellaneous office files (primarily correspondence). July 1979 letter to members has an attached list of both in-town and out-of-town members.

1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, unidentified year (1976?), 1977 and 1978 lists of in-town and out-of-town pathologists. Also includes 1976 lists of UTHSCSA Department of Pathology full-time faculty and residents, Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center pathology residents and staff, Brooks General Hospital staff and residents, and Brackenridge Hospital pathologists.
