Biographical Note

Julio Palmaz was born December 13, 1945 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He studied at the National University of La Plata in Argentina, earning his medical degree in 1971. He then practiced vascular radiology at the San Martin University Hospital in La Plata before moving with his family to the United States in 1977. He spent three years training in radiology at the University of California at Davis' Martinez Veterans Administration Medical Center. In 1983, Dr. Palmaz joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Department of Radiology as Chief of Angiography and Special Procedures until 1999, and as Chief of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Research until 2005. In January 2003 Palmaz received the Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and in 2006 he was named an Ashbel Smith Professor at the Health Science Center. The professorship is named for Ashbel Smith, M.D., pioneering Texas physician who was the first chairman of The University of Texas Board of Regents (1881-1886).

Dr. Palmaz is known for inventing the balloon-expandable stent. Palmaz developed his stent between 1978 and 1985. In 1983, Dr. Stewart Reuter, Chair of Radiology at UT Health Science Center and a mentor to Palmaz, encouraged him to accept a position at the center. Palmaz did so, in part because there he would have access to the resources he needed to further his stent development. He eventually succeeded in creating a prototype of a stainless steel, insertable mesh stent that could be expanded once inside the body to hold a blood vessel or artery open and allow blood to flow more freely. He also secured funding from Philip J. Romano, an entrepreneur who founded restaurant chains such as Fuddruckers and The Macaroni Grill, who offered to put up $250,000 in exchange for a stake in the product. Palmaz began co-developing the stent with Dr. Richard Schatz, a cardiologist at Brooke Army Medical Center. He received a patent for his invention in 1988. It was approved by the FDA for peripheral arterial use in 1991 and for coronary use in 1994.

The balloon-expandable stent was recognized in Intellectual Property International Magazine as one of “Ten Patents that Changed the World” in the last century. Within four years of its FDA approval, the stent was used in over 80% of percutaneous coronary interventions, a virtually unparalleled success. Currently, approximately one million stents are implanted annually worldwide. The balloon angioplasty augmented with the use of the stent has become the preferred treatment for atherosclerosis. However, the stent has not completely done away with restenosis after angioplasty, and improved procedures continue to be sought. The drug-eluting stent, which releases chemicals that inhibit restenosis, has shown marked success and seems to be replacing the bare-metal stent in America.

Dr. Palmaz has 20 issued patents, is the author of 29 books or book chapters, and has authored 104 peer-reviewed publications. He is a 2007 gold medalist of the Society of Interventional Radiology, 2006 inductee of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, a 2005 Distinguished Scientist of the American Heart Association, and fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. Dr. Palmaz’ early stent research artifacts are now part of the medical collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC., as well as the Texas History Museum in Austin, TX. He has received the titles of "Master of Interventional Cardiology" from the Argentina College of Cardiology, and "Extraordinary Professor" from the National University of La Plata, Argentina. In addition, Palmaz has received honorary titles or awards from the American Heart Association, the International Society of Endovascular Surgery, the Society of Interventional Radiology, the German Roentgen Society, The Rotterdam Thoraxcenter in Holland, the Washington Cardiovascular Research Foundation, the Society of Cardiac Angiography, the Texas Heart Institute, the Texas Bar Association, the Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute, the Cardiovascular Institute of the South, and the Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation.
