Biographical Note

Annie Inez New RN was a pioneer registered nurse of southwest Texas. She was born around 1898 in Texas to William I. New, a Texas native, and his German wife. She began her career after graduating in 1923 from the Physicians & Surgeons Hospital School of Nursing, located in San Antonio, Texas. She kept scrapbooks of historical significance during her training and later career showing the pioneer work she did in nursing for 50 years.

Annie first served on the staff in rural Texas hospitals in Gonzales, Yorktown, Cuero, San Marcos, Nixon and other locations. In 1930 she was living with her uncle, Mez A New, and his family in San Antonio and working as a professional nurse. In 1932 she opened the New Convalescent Home on 1016 Blanco Road, the first nursing home in San Antonio. A quiet, clean home staffed by registered nurses, it became very popular in the medical community. It was especially helpful to out of town patients who needed more time to recover. Much of the history of this home was found in her scrapbook.

After closing the home in 1938, Miss New began her work in private duty nursing, which she maintained until she retired. She died on Jan 21, 1987, at the age of 89 while living in the home of a relative in Pearsall, Texas.

Annie New was always an ardent supporter of her professional organization and donated her historical notebooks to the history collection of District 8 Texas Nurses Association.
