            <head>Administrative History Note</head>
            <p>
                The Texas Surgical Society was conceived in 1914 and formally organized at Houston in March, 1915.   Dr. James E. Thompson, first Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch, became the first president and served in office with Dr. J. H. Reuss, first vice-president; Dr. F. B.Paschal, second vice-president; Dr. W. Burton Thorning, secretary; and Dr. J. B. Smoot, treasurer.  There were 21 charter members.  The object of the Society was the cultivation and improvement of the science and art of surgery and the elevation of the standards of the practice of medicine.
