Townshend Family: A Preliminary Inventory of Their Correspondence in the Manuscript Collection at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center

This collection of Townshend family correspondence reflects day-to-day events, both personal and public, of this extensive 19th century family. Living in England, Scotland, and Ireland in the 1800s, the Townshend family counted among its members both military and church leaders. Of note is the spelling of the surname which varies between Townsend and Townshend, with Townshend becoming the predominate spelling in later years. Family members Aubrey, Edward, Eliza, John (Jack), and Marianne Oliver (Minnie) are especially well-represented for the period 1856-1884. Arranged in chronological order, the letters of frequent correspondents are grouped by the given name of Townshend family members, unless otherwise stated. Undated letters follow the chronological sequence. Letters from friends and acquaintances are also present, as is ephemera. An index of correspondents follows the folder list, though the identities and names of the correspondents have not yet been fully verified.
