John Fowles:A Preliminary Inventory of His Diaries at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research CenterScope and ContentsA 1991 purchase of John Fowles's papers allowed for the inclusion of his diaries, to be shipped at a later date. In the interim the diaries were held at the Exeter University Library for use by Fowles and his designees. In 1992, Fowles wrote: "I have kept a sort of diary, some record of my life since the late 1940s. At times it has been sporadic, or intermittent. It never had any clear literary or historical purpose, deliberately reflecting either my personal or the later twentieth century's growth. Nonetheless, I always had an idea that it might one day be of some value to a curious later reader. I somehow amassed it as I collect books (or the older ones): that is, very haphazardly. That's why, in the earlier years, I often referred to the entries as 'disjoints'--disjointed thoughts, notions, occurrences. It is largely in manuscript to about 1960; thereafter much more in typescript. I include diaries until my wife Elizabeth's death in March 1990. For the time being I retain some subsequent to that." The diaries, arranged in chronological order, vary in size and format; some are bound, while the majority were kept in loose leaf binders. The diaries in the binders have been rehoused into folders, with pages numbered as needed. There are occasional inserted pages (notes, clippings, etc.) which have been sleeved and placed in their original order within the diary pages. Also present is a small amount of correspondence and poetry.
