Penelope Lively:A Preliminary Inventory of an Addition to Her Papers at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research CenterScope and ContentsThis addition to Penelope Lively's papers received in 1996 includes material for her novel Heat Wave, drafts of short stories, and correspondence, primarily with publishers. Like the original materials, this accretion is divided into Works and Correspondence. Series I., Works, contains the literary progression of Heat Wave (1996) from an early holograph notebook through several typescript versions to an edited copy of the completed novel. Similarly, corrected typescript drafts are present for her short stories, both for children and adult readers. The short stories are arranged according to Ms. Lively's groupings, either included in or written since her published collections, Nothing Missing but the Samovar, Corruption, and Pack of Cards. Correspondence in Series II also follows Lively's original order and, with the exception of letters from children and strangers, consists of publishers' correspondence regarding Ms. Lively's book projects. Publishers include Doubleday, E. P. Dutton, Laurence Pollinger and William Heinemann. Numerous published works, especially translations, were received with this accretion. These have been transferred to the Ransom Center library.
