Scope and Contents

This collection of Penelope Lively manuscripts represents nearly all of her works, as well as correspondence with agents, publishers, and her readers. The first series, Works, contains her award-winning writings for children and adults in the form of holograph notebooks, typescript drafts, proofs, and galleys. Titles include The Driftway, The Ghost of Thomas Kempe, A Stitch in Time, The Road to Lichfield, According to Mark, Nothing Missing but the Samovar and Other Stories, Treasures of Time, and Moon Tiger. Subseries A includes individual titles arranged in alphabetical order and described using Ms. Lively's handwritten notes on the folders and envelopes accompanying the collection. Some correspondence exists with these writings, usually associated with the mechanics of publication. Additional holograph notebooks, each containing multiple titles, are found in Subseries B.

In Series II, Ms. Lively's correspondence is grouped into categories according to her original descriptions and then arranged by date. The correspondence includes letters regarding engagements, fan mail ("letters from strangers"), business dealings with her agent Murray Pollinger, and miscellaneous letters. A small amount of Ms. Lively's outgoing correspondence, in the form of unsigned carbon copies, are scattered throughout, especially in the Pollinger files.

The entire collection is in good physical condition with the sole exception of some minor tape damage among the typescript drafts.
