Biographical Note

In 1910, Amanda Stoltzfus organized the Tuleta Agriculture High School in Tuleta, Texas. This was the first school of its kind in Texas, and she served as principal and brought in faculty from Smith College and the University of Wisconsin to provide instruction in sewing, cooking, agriculture, and manual training to rural children. She later became a lecturer in rural education for the University of Texas at Austin Division of Extension. She died on October 11, 1930.

Scope and Contents

The Amanda Stoltzfus Papers, [ca. 1910-1920] contain documentation concerning Ms. Stoltzfus' activities as a teacher of domestic economy and agricultural and manual training at Tuleta High School and as lecturer to rural schools for the University of Texas Division of Extension. The papers primarily contain correspondence concerning her efforts, while at Tuleta, to acquire literature and other materials pertaining to rural education, and reports of her travels as lecturer for the UT Division of Extension to rural communities in Armstrong County and Smith County. Photoprints of Stoltzfus and others, Tuleta High School, and a farmhouse, along with a photomechanical reproduction of the community fair at Tuleta, can also be found.
