Biographical Note

Ernest J. Lovell, Jr. was born in 1918 in Roanoke, Virginia. He was educated at Duke, Cornell, and Princeton, and worked at Cornell, Duke, and the University of Mississippi before joining the faculty of the Department of English at the University of Texas at Austin in 1947. A prominent Romantic scholar, Lovell was the author or editor of four published works on Lord Byron. He additionally edited Modern Drama: An Anthology of Nine Plays, published in 1963, and served as editor of Texas Studies in Language and Literature. He organized the Byron exhibition at UT during the Byron sesquicentennial year and was a founding member of the American Committee of The Byron Society. Lovell taught at UT until his death in June of 1975.
