Historical Note

Photographs in the African American Baseball Collection feature images of an unidentified African American man who may have played for the Negro Leagues Monroe (Louisiana) Monarchs team. Evidence indicates that the collection may have been compiled by Ray T. Sheppard, who played for the Monarchs, as well as Birmingham Black Barons, the Detroit Stars, and the Detroit Wolves, cities that are identified within the collection. Sheppard (1902-1987) coached high school baseball and football at Central High School in Galveston, Texas for 38 years.
