Biographical Note

Music historian John Tumpak documented the Big Band Era of 1930-1940, writing about both well-known and lesser-known musicians, arrangers, singers, and band leaders. His 2009 book When Swing Was the Thing: Personality Profiles of the Big Band Era, draws on personal interviews to detail this musical period.


Scope and Contents

The John Tumpak Music Collection, 2012-2014, is comprised of four periodicals containing Tumpak's articles on American Big Band history and featuring Texas artists. Two 2012 issues of Memory Lane feature a history of vocalist Loise Tobin, a jazz singer from Aubrey, Texas. The 2012 magazine Big Band Buddies International also features an article on Tobin, who married the trumpet player Harry James, of Beaumont, and sang with the Benny Goodman Band. The International Association of Jazz Record Collector, June 2014, features an article on jazz music of the Caceres family of Corpus Christi.
