Biographical/Historical Note

Steve Nickerson was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1957. He began his career in photography as an intern at an Ohio paper now known as the Springfield News-Sun. He then worked at the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky until 1987, when he moved on to the Detroit Free Press. In Detroit, he garnered attention with high profile stories depicting Dr. Jack Kevorkian, death row inmates, and the AIDS crisis. After nearly a decade working in Detroit, he joined the Denver Rocky Mountain News where his work received praise for the raw, yet sensitive portrayals of his subjects. During his tenure at the Rocky Mountain News, he won two Pulitzer Prizes for his coverage of the Columbine High School shootings (1999) and forest fires in Colorado (2003), as well as a World Press Photo award for his unconventional fashion photography (1997). After a 15-year battle with scleroderma, a chronic, autoimmune disorder, Nickerson passed away in 2013. He is survived by his wife, Karen McClean.

Scope and Contents

Ranging in date from 1978 to 2013, the Steven R. Nickerson Photographic Archive is comprised of 60 linear feet of photographic prints, film negatives, color slides, correspondence, tear sheets, digital images, personal projects, and artifacts. The bulk of the archive consists of photography made during Nickerson’s photojournalism career with the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky (1982-1987), the Detroit Free Press (1987-1995) and the Denver Rocky Mountain News (1995-2009). Subjects documented within the archive include human interest stories, music, sports and fashion. Particularly noteworthy assignments include, “On Stinking Creek, Kentucky,” documenting rural poverty; the story of Randy Walkowe, a young child who died from an AIDS-related illness; and the award-winning “Father’s Days.” Researchers should note that the archive has only a small number of slides, negatives, and test prints from Nickerson’s coverage of the Columbine High School shootings and memorial service. Nickerson’s personal work within the archive contains a series of fashion photography and musicians photographed with a Hasselblad camera; musicians featured include Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, KISS, Prince, Tina Turner, Ted Nugent and Meat Loaf.
