Biographical Note

Verne E. Grant was born on October 17, 1917, and grew up in the Bay area of California. He earned his BA degree in Botany from the University of California in Berkeley in 1940. He traveled as a naturalist to South America for five years and served as a translator with the U.S. War Department in Panama before earning his PhD in Botany and Genetics from Berkeley in 1949. He served in a variety of positions before joining the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin, including as Visiting Investigator at the Carnegie Institution of Washington in Stanford, California; as a Geneticist and Experimental Taxonomist at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, California; as a Professor of Biology at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas; and as Director of the Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum and as a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Arizona in Superior, Arizona.

In 1970, Dr. Grant joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin. He served as Professor of Botany from 1970 to 1987 and as Professor Emeritus from 1987 until his death in 2007. Along with teaching, he conducted research and wrote in the fields of species biology, pollination ecology, plant genetics, and evolutionary theory. Grant was the author of Plant Speciation, The Origins of Adaptations, Genetics of Flowering Plants, and Hummingbirds and Their Flowers (coauthored by his wife Karen A. Grant), among other books, articles, and publications. In 1997 he authored a genealogical book, The Edward Grant family and Related families in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and California. Grant was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of numerous scientific awards and recognitions.

Grant married Karen A. Grant in 1961 and the couple had three children. Following a brief illness, he died in Austin on May 29, 2007.

The Verne Grant Papers, 1799-2007 (bulk 1949-2005), are primarily composed of subject files and binders which contain the professional papers of Grant, including notes, correspondence, reports, articles, photographs, drawings, research project files, and publications. Materials pertaining to Grant's books, such as correspondence, reviews, contracts, foreign editions, translations, sales, rights, and royalties, can also be found. The papers additionally contain course and administrative materials pertaining to Grant's positions at UT, at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, at the University of Arizona, and at Texas A&M, along with his membership in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
