Biographical Note

George W. Hoffman (1914-1990) was one of three original members of the faculty of the Department of Geography at the University of Texas at Austin and former chairman of the AAG Committee on International Cooperation. He served as Chair of the department from 1978-1982. His book Federalism and Regional Development: Case Studies on the Experience in the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany was the result of the first German-American geography seminar, held at the University of Texas in September 1979. Hoffman was extremely active on faculty committees, specifically those concerned with a faculty club or center and with faculty promotion and salary. He wrote and edited numerous books and periodicals on geography. In memory of Hoffman and his wife, the University established the Viola S. Hoffman and George W. Hoffman Lectureship in Liberal Arts and Fine Arts.

Scope and Contents

The George W. Hoffman Papers, 1951-1976, are comprised of reports, correspondence, clippings, memoranda, printed material, and administrative files that pertain to Hoffman's work on faculty committees at the University of Texas at Austin. The papers include a bound volume of UT faculty and committee materials from 1953 to 1955, the UT publication commemorating the inauguration of Logan Wilson as fifteenth president of UT, other published reports, and administrative working files that document UT faculty committee work in the mid-twentieth century.
