The papers are comprised of correspondence, research materials, and photographs of Edwin DuBois and Alice Burtt Shurter, and document the years of work Hayes put into his dissertation.

Biographical Note

Arthur Robert Hayes earned a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Texas in 1952, after having spent five years researching and writing a dissertation on "The Influence and Impact of Edwin DuBois Shurter on Speech Education in Texas". He had corresponded with Mrs. Alice B. Shurter for years while preparing the work. Hayes was a student in the State Home High School at Corsicana, Texas, and Shurter was his judge for debates and declamations. E. D. Shurter organized the UT School of Oratory in 1899, a precursor to the UT Department of Public Speaking, of which he served as chairman, 1899 to 1923. In 1910 Shurter organized the Texas High School Debating League, which was the foundation for the University Interscholastic League. He additionally served as director of the UT Department of Extension, 1912 to 1920. Dr. Hayes went on to become head of the Speech and Drama Department at Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas.

Scope and Contents

The Arthur Robert Hayes Papers, 1879-1954, are comprised of correspondence, research materials, and photographs of Edwin DuBois and Alice Burtt Shurter. The materials document the years of work Hayes put into his dissertation on "The Influence and Impact of Edwin DuBois Shurter on Speech Education in Texas". Hayes' high school diploma from State Home High School at Corsicana, Texas, is also included, as is a letter, a telegram, and notes regarding D. F. Strickland's appointment to the UT Board of Regents in 1942.
