Biographical Note

William Edward McCarty was born in 1882 in San Antonio, the son of Jesse A. McCarty and Martha Cullver McCarty. As a young boy, McCarty’s family moved to Oklahoma where his father worked as a rancher. William McCarty initially found work as a cowboy before taking a job as Train Guard with Union Pacific in 1906. Over the course of his career McCarty worked as a Sheriff, Livestock Detective, Texas Ranger, and Special Agent. His work focused largely on hunting down train robbers, and cattle and horse thieves. Over the course of his career, McCarty traveled widely, spending time in Texas, Wyoming, Illinois, Montana, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. McCarty married Ida Jameson in 1914. He died in 1947.

The William Edward McCarty papers consist of a handwritten autobiographical account of his life, along with typed transcripts. The collection also includes photos, clippings and articles about McCarty’s work, as well as correspondence, reports and memos, which further document his career.
