Biographical Note

Professor Emeritus Glenn G. Gilbert taught in the Department of Germanic Languages at the University of Texas at Austin in the 1960s and 1970s. He earned his PhD from Harvard University in 1963, writing a dissertation on the German dialect spoken in Kendall and Gillespie Counties, Texas. He also authored the Linguistic Atlas of Texas German, UT Press, 1972, and articles on the German language in Texas for American Speech and Zeitschrift für Mundartenforschung.

Scope and Contents

The Glenn G. Gilbert Papers, 1964-1970, are comprised of questionnaires, interviews, maps, and lists pertaining to the study of dialectical development among Texas Germans. The questionnaires and interviews are arranged alphabetically by county, and itemizations of questionnaire responses are numbered. A manuscript copy of the book edited by Gilbert, Texas Studies in Bilingualism, can also be found.
