Biographical Note

Cleta M. Galvez-Hjornevik authored "James A. Michener: Educator" for her dissertation at the University of Texas at Austin in 1984. In 1985, Mrs. Galvez-Hjornevik wrote Mentoring among Teachers: A Review of the Literature, as a staff member of the Research and Development Center for Teacher Education at the University of Texas at Austin.

Scope and Contents

The Cleta M. Galvez-Hjornevik Papers, 1936-1985, contain research notes, photocopied research and archival materials, correspondence, writings, publications, photocopied photographs, and taped interviews on audiocassette. These materials document Galvez-Hjornevik's research on James A. Michener's career in education, especially as it relates to his contribution as a social studies teacher. Galvez-Hjornevik's research and notes on conducting oral histories and archival research are also included, as are correspondence with and materials created by Wilbur Murra, an associate of Michener's at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the first full-time executive secretary of National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). The audiotapes contain interviews conducted by Galvez-Hjornevik with Michener and others who knew or worked with him, and transcripts of these interviews can be found in the collection as well.
