Abstract: Ralph E. Frede, public relations professional, received a bachelor's degree in Journalism (1943) and master's degree in Government (1947) from the University of Texas at Austin. He was county coordinator for Homer P. Rainey's 1946 gubernatorial campaign. Correspondence, printed material, reports, speeches, photographs and course materials document Frede's career in public relations in Texas and Illinois, his work with the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (known now as March of Dimes) and his work as county coordinator for Rainey's 1946 gubernatorial campaign in Texas.

Biographical Note

Ralph Edward Frede was born on September 28, 1921, in Floydada, Texas, to Elmer and Marjorie Frede. The family moved to Austin in 1935. Frede graduated from Austin High School in 1939 and entered the University of Texas at Austin. At UT, Frede served as editor of the Daily Texan and as president of Alpha Phi Omega. He earned his Bachelor of Journalism degree in 1943 and his MA in Government in 1947 before serving in the United States Navy as Communications Officer and Executive Officer, U.S.S. LST 286, and as operations officer of LST Group 105.

After Frede returned from the war, he became county coordinator for Homer P. Rainey's 1946 gubernatorial campiagn. In 1947, he joined the staff of the Austin Chamber of Commerce as director of public relations, civic affairs, and education bureaus. He joined the University of Texas at Austin's staff in 1948, becoming Assistant to the Dean of Student Life. In 1950, Frede opened a state office in Austin for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (NFIP), now known as the March of Dimes. Ht then headed the NFIP office in Missouri from 1952 to 1956 before returning to Texas to server as Director of Development and lecturer in Public Relations at the University of Houston, 1956 to 1970. He served as Vice President of Public Affairs of Baylor College of Medicine from 1970 to 1989, and, upon his retirement, kept working as a consultant in public relations, public affairs, and fundraising for non-profit organizations.

Ralph Frede has been honored with countless awards and recognitions for his acts in the field of public relations and was an active member of the Rotary Club in Austin and in Houston, Texas. He was a director of the St. David's Episcopal Church Foundation and served on the Advisory Committee of the Texas Union and the UT Psychology Department. He participated for years in the UT SAGE program.

Frede married Martha Chambers in 1946 and the couple had four daughters. He is the namesake of the Ralph Frede Endowed Scholarship in Public Relations in the College of Communications at the University of Texas at Austin. He died on January 1, 2005.

The Ralph E. Frede Papers, 1942-1998, contain correspondence, printed material, and campaign material documenting Frede's work as county coordinator for Homer P. Rainey's 1946 gubernatorial campaign in Texas. The papers also contain correspondence, printed material, reports, speeches, photographs and course materials that pertain to Frede's career in public relations in Texas and Illinois, his work with the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (now known as March of Dimes), and his career at the University of Texas at Austin, at the University of Houston, and at Baylor College of Medicine. Additionally, the collection relates to Frede's experiences during World War II, and his work in church administration and with the Public Relations Society of America.
