Scope and Contents

Composed of a personal letter and related papers. The letter is from D. Haynes to Benjamin Polk Haynes, the two presumably being cousins. Written on October 13, 1884, in Mackburg, Oregon, the letter describes D. Haynes unpleasant and unhealthy experiences while living near Whitesboro, Texas, from 1864-1879. Though he admits that he earned a sizable amount of money in Texas, Haynes laments the harsh climate and numerous illnesses that afflicted his family. He urges Benjamin Haynes to be very cautious in deciding whether to move to Texas.

Includes a typed transcript of the letter as transcribed by Benjamin P. Haynes' grandson of the same name. Also includes two newspaper articles related to the letter.
