Historical Note

Graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin have had an elected, legislative organization since 1968. Originally known as the Council of Graduate Students (COGS), this legislative body was first registered with the department of Campus and Community Involvement on November 8, 1968. In an effort to better address the needs and interests of graduate students at the university, COGS underwent a number of structural changes between 1989 and 1994. In August 1994, COGS disbanded and the UT Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) was formed.

The Graduate Student Assembly, along with the other legislative student organizations (Senate of College Councils and Student Government) is recognized as a member of the UT-Austin administrative organization, designated to represent the graduate student body. The GSA serves as the official means for graduate students to communicate with the university. The GSA is made up of elected officers, representatives from the various departments across the graduate school, graduate student representatives to university committees and other members, including ex-officio members like the Vice Provost and Dean of Students.

The GSA works actively to address the needs of graduate students through advocacy and legislation, working at university, state and national levels. This includes being aware of legislation in Texas that has the potential to impact graduate students, and researching and testifying before the legislature. The GSA has worked on initiatives to improve graduate student health and well-being, improve educational outcomes for graduate student-parents, and to implement a Graduate Student Bill of Rights. The GSA also works with Student Advocates for Graduate Education (SAGE) to advocate for the interests of graduate students at a national level.

Further, the GSA works to provide programming and events for graduate students across the university to connect with one another. These events include the annual Welcome BBQ, the GSA 5K, and Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week.
