Historical Sketch

The Mathematical Sciences Education Board (MSEB) was created by the National Research Council (NRC) in 1984 in response to the report, A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform, produced in 1983 by the National Commission on Excellence in Education. Until the late 1990s, the MSEB functioned as a separate board. It was absorbed into a larger science education board at the NRC.

Scope and Contents

The collection documents the early years of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board, 1987-1992, during which Lynn A. Steen participated as a member of the founding executive committee; he also wrote and edited several MSEB publications during this period. In addition, the collection includes material from the three academic years during which Steen worked as the Executive Director of the board, 1992-1995, as well as files subsequent to his leadership. Documents include correspondence, memoranda, source files related to books and reports published by the board, strategic plans, planning documents, task force files, newsletters, and meeting material.

The collection is divided into two series: Activities and Publications. The order of the files and the collection was preserved as received.
