Biographical/Historical Note

A native of Memphis, Texas, S.C. Miles relocated to Rockdale in Milam County in 1928 and became the superintendent of schools, serving until 1946.


Scope and Contents

The S.C. Miles Papers, [circa 1920s-1940s], are comprised of educational and personal materials, such as clippings, transcriptions, curriculum information, and correspondence, representing Miles’ career as the superintendent of public schools in Rockdale, Texas. The bulk of his papers consist of articles regarding education, senior roster lists, and speech transcripts, including a typescript of his 1941 commencement speech, as well as a 1946 resignation letter and subsequent recommendations sent from his coworkers and peers to another school district. Also included are an undated term paper by Miles titled “Emotionalizing the Curriculum,” poetry transcriptions, a certificate from the War Savings Staff, deposit receipts and holiday greetings from various Texas businesses.
