Abstract: W. J. Embrey, a native of Brenham, Texas, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1913 with a degree in law. UT publications from the early 1910s are also included.

Biographical Note

W. J. Embrey, a native of Brenham, Texas, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1913 with a degree in law. He was admitted to the law firm of Mathis & Teague in Brenham that same year, causing the name of the law firm to be changed to Mathis, Teague & Embrey. He also served as the Secretary of the Brenham University of Texas Club and later the president of the Brenham Rotary Club.

Scope and Contents

The W. J. Embrey Collection, 1909-1916, contains printed material and ephemera pertaining to University of Texas history and various University activities and events, including athletic events, debates, commencements, music, and theater. Picture postcards showcase scenes of Austin and New Braunfels, Texas, along with buildings on the UT campus, Dean of the UT Law School John Charles Townes, and UT athletics. Texas Songs and Yells songbooks, UT athletic event tickets, handbooks of registration and regulations of UT and the UT Law School, invitations to UT commencements and final balls, and dodgers and posters reflecting debates, student associations, and student life are also included. Additionally, the collection contains programs reflective of the UT Texas Independence Day Celebration of 1913, banquets, commencements, debates, the installation of UT President Robert Vinson, sporting events, band, opera, theater, and the Young Men's Christian Association. Finally, the collection includes clippings from the Houston Daily Post, mainly regarding government and prohibition; a printed speech of Hon. Jonathan Bourne, Jr. of Oregon in the Senate of the United States, 1911; and original copies of UT publications including The Texan, The Peripatos Coyote, and The University of Texas Commoner. A cover of an Austin Statesman from November 1911 is also included.
