Biographical Note

James Winfred (J. W.) Edgar was born in Briggs, Texas, on September 17, 1904. He attended Howard Paine University and earned his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1950, Edgar became the first appointed Texas Commissioner of Education, a position he held for 24 years. Before his appointment, Edgar was superintendent of the Orange, Texas, public schools (1939-1947) and of the Austin Independent School District (1947-1950).

Dr. Stephen Carroll Anderson, born in 1943, is a professor of education at Texas A&M University. He earned an MA in Latin American Studies and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Austin. He wrote his dissertation on J. W. Edgar and published a book, J. W. Edgar: Educator for Texas, in 1984.

Scope and Contents

The J. W. Edgar Biography Collection, 1947-1987, contains oral history interviews and research materials collected by Dr. Stephen Anderson as part of his University of Texas at Austin dissertation, later published, on J. W. Edgar, the first Commissioner of Education in Texas. Fifty-six audiocassette tapes comprise the interview portion of the collection, which also includes transcripts of interviews conducted by Anderson with Edgar, interviews with other notable people such as Allan Shivers and Ralph Yarborough for the oral history project on Edgar, and articles, biographical material, and memoirs on Edgar. Furthermore, the collection includes research material collected by Anderson including articles and speeches written by Edgar, correspondence with and about Edgar pertaining to awards and nominations, and correspondence, background information, and printed material relating to the Texas Education Agency and education in Texas. An inscribed copy of Anderson's book (by Edgar) and book reviews are also included.
