Biographical Note

Lee Byrne, former professor of classical languages at the University of Texas at Austin, earned a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (1901) and a PhD from Columbia University. He also was a master in charge of Modern Languages at Lake Forest Academy, Illinois, and an instructor in Latin, St. Louis Normal and High School, St. Louis, Missouri. Byrne spent many years studying the life and times of Demetrius Poliorcetes with the intention of writing a novel but died before he had begun to write the book. His widow, Mrs. Lee Byrne, of Austin, Texas, gave Lee's notes to British novelist Alfred Duggan, who completed Byrne's projected historical novel, which was published under the title Elephants and Castles.

Scope and Contents

The Lee Byrne Papers contain notes on the history of Ancient Greece and Macedonia and notes on Macedonian General Demetrius Poliorcetes. These notes, years of study by Lee Byrne, were used by Alfred Duggan for his novel Elephants and Castles. Notes are separated by topics and arranged alphabetically.
