Abstract: American sociologist Norman Birnbaum is an emeritus professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, and a member of the editorial board of The Nation. The sizable collection includes Birnbaum's correspondence with academics, journalists, and other intellectuals; documents relating to his political activism; conference materials and presentations; lecture notes and teaching materials; draft copies and research notes from editorials, books, and other published works; and unpublished materials and restricted items.

Biographical Note

Norman Birnbaum was born in New York on July 21, 1926, and was educated in New York City's public schools and at Williams College before earning a doctorate in sociology from Harvard University. Professor Birnbaum is a renowned intellectual who has been active in politics, academia, and journalism on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean since the 1950s. He has taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Oxford University, the University of Strasbourg, Amherst College, served on the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research and was Distinguished Fulbright Professor at the University of Bologna. Currently Professor Emeritus at Georgetown University Law Center, Birnbaum is a prolific author and essayist. His writings include The Crisis of Industrial Society (1969), Toward a Critical Sociology (1971), and After Progress: American Social Reform and European Socialism in the Twentieth Century (2001).

Active in politics and journalism, Birnbaum was a founding editor of New Left Review and remains a member of the editorial board of The Nation. He served as an advisor to the Ted Kennedy Presidential Campaign in 1980, and as a consultant to the National Security Council. He has also worked as a consultant for several European political parties and unions.

Scope and Contents

The Norman Birnbaum Papers, 1942-2009, include correspondence with academics, journalists, and other intellectuals; documents relating to his political activism; conference materials and presentations; lecture notes and teaching materials; draft copies and research notes from editorials, books, and other published works; and unpublished materials and restricted items. The papers pertain to Birnbaum's work with committees and associations such as the American Sociological Association and the Institute for Policy Studies; political activities and groups including the Democratic party, New Democratic Coalition, and the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (1967); his education and teaching career; and writings by and about Birnbaum. Several of Birnbaum's research areas and topics are referenced in the collection, not limited to general higher education and education reform, student protests, politics and society in the United States, Karl Marx and Marxism, foreign policy, arms control, socialism, religion, populism, and environmentalism.
