Biographical Note

George Washington Saunders (1854–1933), born in Gonzales County, Texas, first participated in a trail drive to Kansas in 1871. Subsequently, he completed numerous cattle drives to New Orleans, Mexico, and the Texas coast, as well as northern railheads.

Saunders entered the livestock commission business and in 1910 began the George W. Saunders Livestock Commission Company, with offices in San Antonio, Fort Worth, Kansas City, and St. Louis. He contributed to the development of San Antonio's Union Station Stock Yards, later serving as its general manager.

Saunders helped organize the Old Time Trail Drivers Association of Texas in 1915, serving as the group's president for many years. In 1917, he began to solicit narratives from the Trail Drivers' membership, in hopes of creating a record of the vanished trail-drive experience. Working with newspaperman J. Marvin Hunter, Saunders collected more than 300 narratives that comprise The Trail Drivers of Texas (1925). Saunders' collection is considered an important source of primary materials on cattlemen and cattle drives.

Saunders spearheaded efforts to create a trail drivers' monument in San Antonio, Texas. Completed in 1940, this statue by sculptor Gutzon Borglum now stands before the Texas Pioneer and Trail Drivers Memorial Hall.
