Historical Note

The Capitol Hotel was one of the finest Hotels in Houston in the mid-19th century. Occupying the former Republic of Texas capitol building, it was renovated by H. Marple in 1865 before being torn down in 1881. The ledger was acquired by Houston grocer August Proetzel in 1870 and used as an account book until 1899.

Scope and Contents

The Capitol Hotel guest register dates from 1866 to 1867. Most guests hailed from Texas, with relatively few arriving from the North or overseas. The register generally includes guest names, their date of arrival, room number, residence final charges and sometimes their next destination. After acquiring the ledger in 1870, grocer August Proetzel used the remaining blank pages of the volume to keep accounts in both English and German.
