Biographical

John Bryant Dupuy, an early settler of Erath County, was a soldier in the Mexican War and a citizen of the Republic of Texas. Born in Christian County, Kentucky, Dupuy followed the Riggs Pennington family to Texas and married Matilda A. Pennington in 1838. In 1836, he served as a carpenter in the Republic of Texas army near New Year's Creek, in Washington County. One of Erath County's original land patent holders, Dupuy was elected Chief Justice (now County Judge) for multiple terms, beginning in 1857.

Scope and Contents

The John B. Dupuy Papers include seven official documents relating to his property ownership in Erath County and his later service as Chief Justice, an office now called County Judge. The documents include two 1847 land grants signed by Gov. J. Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas, for property in the Milam District on the Bosque River, as well as a 1849 property transfer signed by the Washington County clerk. The collection includes certificates for Dupuy's election to office in 1848, 1857, 1858, and 1860 in Washington and Erath counties, signed by serving Texas Governors including E.M. Pease and Sam Houston.

The collection also includes color photocopies and images scanned to DVD.
