Biographical Note

On March 27, 1790, Juan Vicente Güemes Pacheco y Padilla proposed to the Ministerio de Gracia y Justicia of Spain the creation of an Archivo General de la Nueva España as part of the reorganization plan for the Secretaria de Cámara del Virreinato. The newly founded archive compiled, together with the documents produced by the old Secretaría de Cámara, the ones being produced by the other agencies, ensuring the proper custody and preservation of the documentation.
