Biographical Note

Founded in 1870 by a group of cotton brokers and merchants, the New York Cotton Exchange is the oldest commodity exchange in New York. The Exchange, a not-for-profit corporation, consists of 450 members representing either commercial users, commission houses or themselves. Through out the years it has diversified its product line, dealing in wool and orange juice futures and in 1985 entered the world of financial futures and options.


Scope and Contents

Ledgers, printed materials, minutes, membership records, reports, financial records, legal documents and photographs make up the New York Exchange Archive, 1822-1978, documenting its operation and activities. The history of the cotton trade is reflected in market reports, yearbooks and annual reports of the Exchange, and circulars to members. The development and management of the Exchange is documented in minutes of the Board of Managers; membership applications; transfers and minutes; records of pension funds and investments; and other financial materials. In addition, there is a small amount of documentation relating to the wool industry.
